Becoming an Optometrist in Ireland

Here at Clarity Locums, we employ locums from a range of different healthcare backgrounds. Included in our pool of available shifts is positions for optometrists.

What is an optometrist?

Optometrists are healthcare professionals who provide primary eye care. They conduct eye examinations, and can diagnose and treat any abnormalities or diseases affecting the eye or related structures. If medical attention is required, an optometrist will refer you to a doctor. Optometrists can also prescribe you with glasses, contact lenses, or visual aids if needed.

How do you become an optometrist in Ireland?

Becoming an optometrist in Ireland can be a little difficult as there is only one course in the entire country which you can study to get into the profession: BSc (Hons) Optometry in TUD. The course is four years long and typically only takes on a class of approximately 25 students per year.

Once you graduate with your BSc (Hons), you are then eligible to take the Professional Qualifying Examinations of the Association of Optometrists, Ireland. Success in these exams, paired with your BSc in Optometry, will allow you to then register with CORU (the Health and Social Care Professionals Council).
